Natural Medicine at NCNM

Botanical Medicine

Botanical medicine, also known as herbal medicine, is the art and science of using medicinal plants therapeutically to prevent and treat illness, and promote health. Plant substances are powerful medicines. They stimulate the body’s innate healing response and address a variety of problems simultaneously with minimal likelihood of side effect.

Clinical Nutrition

The concept that “Food is medicine” is a cornerstone of naturopathic training and practice. A growing body of scientific knowledge validates the naturopathic approach to diet and nutrition. Many medical conditions can be treated more effectively with foods and nutritional supplements than by other means—and with fewer complications and side effects. Naturopathic physicians use diet, natural hygiene, fasting, and nutritional supplementation in their practices.

Homeopathic Medicine

Homeopathic medicine, a medical system developed in Germany at the end of the 18th century, is based on the principle of “like cures like.” Homeopathic remedies are derived primarily from substances that come from plants and minerals. Clinical observation indicates that it works on a subtle, yet powerful, energetic level, gently acting to promote healing on the physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels.

Mind/Body Medicine

Mental attitudes and emotional states may influence, or even cause, physical illness. Mind-body medicine focuses on the interactions between mind and body, and the powerful ways in which emotional, mental, social and spiritual factors can directly affect health. Counseling, nutritional balancing, stress management, meditation, qigong, flower essences, biofeedback and other therapies are used to help patients heal psychologically.

Minor Surgery

A minor surgical procedure does not penetrate a body cavity. Naturopathic physicians do in-office minor surgery, including suturing and repair of superficial wounds, removal of warts and moles, and removal of foreign bodies, cysts, and other superficial lesions.

Naturopathic Obstetrics/Midwifery

Naturopathic obstetrics and midwifery is a synthesis of the philosophies of naturopathic medicine and traditional midwifery. It provides prenatal and postnatal care using modern diagnostic techniques in combination with midwifery knowledge and wisdom. The naturopathic approach strengthens healthy body functions to assist in a more enjoyable pregnancy and birth experience. With dual training as naturopathic doctors and midwives, naturopathic midwives are uniquely qualified to provide comprehensive health care for the woman and her family throughout their lives.

Classical Chinese Medicine

Classical Chinese medicine represents one of humanity’s richest and uninterrupted streams of traditional knowledge. It is a highly sophisticated clinical system that offers a real alternative for the serious healthcare needs of our time. It is a holistic system of medicine that combines the art and science of human care developed over millennia and is rooted in the ancient tradition of practitioner as medical scholar. The study of classical Chinese medicine involves merging modern innovations with ancient whole-systems science in order to gain new insights into health and healing for the benefit of patients.

Physical Medicine

Naturopathic physicians understand the relationship between structural distortion and imbalance, and physiological dysfunction. Naturopathic medicine has its own methods of therapeutic manipulation of soft tissue, muscles, bones and spine. NDs also use ultrasound, diathermy, exercise, massage, water, heat and cold, and gentle electrical therapies in the treatment of musculoskeletal conditions and pain.
